Baby blues: Does counseling help?

Counseling can help women with baby blues to deal with their condition. It is best to seek professional help for baby blues since if it is left untreated, it can evolve into post partum depression or post partum psychosis. Counseling is the best way to help mothers deal with baby blues since it reduces the need to take medications while breastfeeding. Counseling for mothers with baby blues can be carried out individually or in groups. Counseling should be carried out by a psychologist who specializes in pregnancy and baby related issues.

The counselor may focus on interpersonal relationships and issues so as to identify the root cause behind the negative or sad feelings. She may be able to recommend ways to improve interpersonal relationships so that the mother gets a better support network. This will help her to cope with the demands of motherhood. Group counseling is also good since mothers get to interact with others who are in a similar situation.

They can discuss their feelings of sadness, guilt among themselves and also with their counselor. This helps cultivate friendship and support among mothers. If marital problems are traced to be the root cause of baby blues, marital counseling may be recommended where both parents attends therapy sessions. This will help build better marital bonds which in turn will reduce a lot of stress and tension for the new mother.
