Counseling techniques for depression

Behavioral therapy, cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy, psychotherapy and psychodynamic counseling are the counseling techniques to treat depression. Understanding external behavior of the patient is highly crucial when behavioral therapy is applied on the victim. In most of the cases, behavior of the victim is the major reason behind depression. This therapeutic technique directly addresses the behavioral disorders exhibited by the victim.

In case of cognitive therapy, internal disorders and thought process of the victim are given more priority by the therapist. Challenge before the therapist here is to address issues like pessimism, low confidence level, hopelessness and extreme self-criticisms developed in the victim. In case of interpersonal therapy, the therapist aims at addressing and locating the social interaction causes that create depression and psychological disorder in the victim. In this technique, factors like fantasies, fear and anxieties of the patient are studied carefully and treatment is done accordingly. Psychotherapy is commonly prescribed for people suffering from mental illness. Here, identifying core cause of depression is pivotal.

Effectiveness of this treatment technique is highly dependent upon the comfort level between therapist and the victim. More comfortable they are with each other, faster is the recovery process. Psychodynamic counseling uses Freudian techniques to treat victims of depression.
