Acupuncture has been used for hundreds of years to treat depression in China although it is relatively new to the Western world. The principle of acupuncture is that there is a flow of energy called qi within the body. Factors like depression, anxiety, stress can interrupt the normal flow of qi within the body and result in energy stagnation. According to Chinese medicine, the primary organ associated with depression is the liver. This is the organ that is responsible for the proper flow of qi.
As depression sets in, the flow of qi is interrupted and stagnation occurs. This in turn affects other activities like sleep, digestion, energy levels, memory. Acupuncture aims to restore the flow of qi in a balanced manner. Some specific points in the body are focused upon during treatment. LI4 located on the fleshy web between the thumb and index finger is one such point. Another point is the Liv3, between the big toe and second toe.
Other acupressure points used in treatment of depression include Stomach 36, Spleen 6. Once the energy or qi gets flowing in the normal manner, the patient may feel much better and his energy levels increase. His overall well being improves and feelings of depression ease away. This therapy is free of side effects and can be used in combination with antidepressants or psychotherapy.
