Is there any relation between depression and diet?

Yes, diet definitely has effect our mental balance as it tends to have effect on immune system and hormonal balances. In one of the studies it was revealed that sugar is responsible for raising levels of insulin in the blood. And such act every now and then leads to depressed immunity. And in some cases the physical and immune system state may lead to psychological troubles and the most common one being the depression.

Likewise a healthy and nutritious diet has good effect on our body and therefore has positive effect on our mental health too. However, it is worth noting that no such study evidently shows that diet can reverse depression or treat clinical depression. But it’s a common belief that certain foods do help in betterment of moods and therefore assist in treatments of depression.

Diet guidelines for depression patient:

  1. Nutritious diet: Rather than having junk food or fast food it is recommended to have nutritious diet. Sometimes deficiency of nutrients in the body makes us feel down or in bad moods.
  2. Have antioxidants: Foods must be rich in antioxidants such as vitamin C and E as they help to destruct the free radicals that affect our immune system negatively.
  3. Foods rich in carbohydrates: Carbohydrate rich foods help to soothe the body as well as the mind.
Protein rich foods: They help in increasing mental alertness.
