Lithium is generally well tolerated. Some people may experience mild side effects initially. These usually fade as the body adjusts to lithium. In case of lithium, some side effects could be indicative of lithium toxicity. Therefore, it is essential to report all side effects, even mild ones, to your doctor. Some common side effects associated with the use of lithium include mild hand tremors, increased thirst, increased frequency of urination, diarrhea, loss of co-ordination, muscle fatigue, vomiting.
Signs like giddiness, ringing sound in the ear or tinnitus, blurred vision, seizures are indicative of severe lithium toxicity. In case these side effects are observed, seek medical attention immediately. Some other side effects of lithium include weight gain, impaired memory, slurred speech, drowsiness, poor concentration. Many patients who have taken lithium report experiencing increased hair loss. Some patients report that their hair becomes increasingly dry and thin while using lithium.
Less common side effects of this medication include blackout spells, thyroid problems, irregular heartbeat or arrhythmia, slow heart rate. In children, this medication can cause weakening of the bones. Long term treatment with lithium can affect the functioning of the kidneys. This medication is not recommended for use in pregnant women since it is associated with birth defects.
