Lithium SR General Information

Lithium SR is a prescription based medicine used for the treatment of bipolar disorder. Majorly, this medicine does not offer a potent cure for acute forms of bipolar disorder, however, aids a great deal in managing the symptoms. The medicine basically contains high percentage of the naturally occurring lithium element. This element has been known since decades for relieving bouts of mania.

The drug basically brings results by increasing the presence of neurotransmitters, especially serotonin. This reaction results into clearing of depression and anxiety among the patients. The medication is easily available in varied forms like regular tablet form, syrups and extended-release form. The dosage of these drugs is usually recommended for intake 2-4 times a day.

The extended form of the dosage should not be chewed or crushed into smaller pieces. These forms are meant for oral consumption with water. As with any medication, this drug also has several side effects. Some of the common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, loss of appetite and vomiting. The intake of the drug may be discouraged for consumption among those suffering from conditions like heart diseases, allergies towards certain food or preservatives, kidney damages, and deficiency of sodium in the body.
