However, there are some dangers associated with the use of antidepressants. The most commonly used kind of antidepressants is SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors). Studies have shown that these medications have several side effects associated with them.
Some side effects include dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, weight gain, bladder problems, drowsiness, increased heart rate, decreased libido, frequent headaches, nausea, nervousness, insomnia. Besides these, there are some more serious side effects associated with these medications. They are known to trigger panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, agitation, impulsive behavior, suicidal tendencies, hostile behavior, hypomania and mania.
This kind of aggressive and violent behavior could be caused as a result of the effects of antidepressants on the neurotransmitter serotonin. There have been several instances where patients have exhibited violent and suicidal behavior after starting antidepressant therapy. Another fact is that antidepressants can be addictive just like drugs or tobacco. Discontinuation of these drugs can produce withdrawal symptoms.
