Moclobemide is a kind of Reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase type-A (RIMAs) which is a class of drugs used essentially treat depression and low-grade depression like dysthymia (mood disorder). RIMAs like Moclobemide are considered safer and milder than monoamine oxidase-inhibitors (MAOIs) like phenelzine, since they are irreversible and selective in nature. In addition, Moclobemide does not have cardiovascular adverse effects and other ailments like hyperthermia (elevated uncontrolled body temperature).
Moclobemide is well absorbed in the body, especially during the initial days of therapy, and its medication shows effective results within one or two weeks of the start of the treatment. Depression is believed to occur as a result of imbalance of chemicals like dopamine, within the brain.
These chemicals called monoamines are broken down by other chemicals like monoamine oxidase. Moclobemide works in the following way. It inhibits such chemicals from breaking down the monoamines, and thereby increasing the overall concentration of the chemicals inside the brain. Moclobemide provides relief from depression, by attempting to restore the balance of chemicals. Even though Moclobemide has not been studied extensively as compared to other drugs, it is a commonly used drug for the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression and panic disorders.
