Depression and Licorice as a Natural Treatment

Licorice is an herbal plant that can be used in the treatment of depression and that has more than eight compounds that are known to be MAO inhibitors. This means the properties in this herbal can act as antidepressants in the body, which means it can be used to fight depression naturally.

MAO inhibitors are medications that are often used in the treatment of depression and herbal licorice has the properties that can work in the same manner as these inhibitors naturally without the chemical side effects of prescription medications.

There are some side effects with the use of this herbal in rare cases and these can be headaches, lethargy, sodium and water retention when used for long periods of time. There are also some medical patients that should not use the licorice herbal because of some of its natural properties, which includes kidney patients, especially those on dialysis. The reason for this is not only the retention of sodium, but also because it can cause a drop in the potassium level, which is a dangerous health condition for a patient on dialysis. This like other herbals should be discussed with the physician by people with a medical condition or that are taking medications to control a disease to ensure it will not interact with the medications being taken.
