Nortriptyline - Information About Uses & Side Effects

Nortriptyline is a chloride salt used as antidepressant for depression, which has a tricycle structure. This antidepressant can be used to treat childhood bedwetting, in some conditions it is used to treat chronic pains and migraines.

Nortriptyline is an amitriptyline metabolite that shows an effect on liver, an also on variety of receptors (strong on H1receptors a, moderate on mACh receptors and weak effect on 5-HT1 receptors). Nortriptyline is used as a three months course to treat nocturnal enuresis, a lower dosage of this drug is recommended to avoid major side effects of this drug.

Nortriptyline antidepressant can be taken a maximum up to 150mg by adults starting from a lower dosage, for treatment of migraine associated we can use the dosage starting from 10mg to a maximum of 100mg only to reduce side effects.

Nortriptyline has the side effects of dry mouth, weakness, sedation, constipation and appetite in mild cases.  The lesser to the other antidepressant drugs, over dosage of this may lead to suicidal thoughts in patients, alcohol consumption should be avoided to reduce this side effects.  Before using this drug precautions are to be taken, patient should not use this drug when he has taken any other drugs like monoamine oxidizes, over dosage may lead to hyper pyretic crisis or severe convulsions .
