Postpartum Depression: Can the patients experience mood swings?

Yes, mood swings are an integral part of postpartum depression. In fact, mood swings are one of the most frequently witnessed symptoms of postpartum depression.
It is the rapid hormonal changes occurring in the body post pregnancy that leads to postpartum depression in women. The condition is characterized by many signs and symptoms of depression, but frequent mood swings are very common.
Women often experience sudden changes in their mood without any prior warning.

Immediately after the birth of a child the mother starts experiencing complicated signs and symptoms that involves sudden depression, changes in the mood, isolation and lack of communication too. Women lose appetite, develop a sense of hatred for their child, do not feel sleepy quite often and are usually in a disturbed state of mind. There are many emotional and physical changes occurring in the mind and body of the woman. All these changes together contribute to depression and lack of self interest.

Women also lose interest in sexual relationships and they tend to increase distance with their spouse. This creates more and more mental agitation, which manifests in the form of depression post pregnancy. Mood swings can be controlled through medication and therapies when applied at the initial stages. As the symptoms develop, it is important to see a specialist to start off the necessary course of action.
