Post delivery depression or post partum depression is a form of depression that is seen in new mothers. Almost all mothers go through a depressive phase after the birth of their babies. This is called the baby blues and the condition fades within a week or two. Post partum depression however is more severe and long lasting. It poses a number of problems and risks to both the mother and the baby.
Symptoms of post partum depression include feeling angry, irritable, sad, confused, and tired. The mother may experience mood swings, feeling happy and exhilarated at one moment and sad at the next. She may also experience changes in appetite, sleep patterns. Other symptoms associated with this condition include a lack of interest in the baby, frustration, disoriented behavior, poor concentration in extreme cases the mother may feel suicidal or even think about hurting her baby. The exact cause of post partum depression is not known. A number of factors like hormonal changes, the stress of delivery and looking after a new baby, lack of support from family and friends are associated with this condition. It can be treated through counseling, medications and support networks.
It is essential for the mother to get plenty of rest and also have some time for herself when she can unwind and relax. Women who do not have support from their spouse of parents, those who have financial problems or babies with health problems, women with a history of depression are more prone to developing post partum depression.
