Relaxation techniques can effectively address depression through reducing stress hormones. This technique can help in changing the chemistry of brain. Therapists generally advice the victims breathing deeply while they are under relaxation techniques to counter depression. Long breathes have relaxing effects on both body and mind. Sitting straight and breathing slowly is highly effective in this direction. Mediation is another effective relaxation technique to counter depression. Daily meditation of at least 15 minutes is highly recommended by therapists.  People who cannot give much time to themselves are at the riskier end of depression.

You need to give proper time to yourself and practice at least one of the above techniques for near about 30 minutes daily. Yoga is also helpful in this direction. There are several yogic practices which can exert relaxing effects on both body and mind. However, relaxation technique is not for all. The results are highly person specific.
