Comparatively, Moclobemide is tolerated to a considerable extent usually by the patients, with serious adverse effects being reported in very rare cases. However, blurred vision, rashes and redness of skin, nausea, headace, dizziness, heartburn, and dry mouth are some of the common side effects.
Other side effects include urticaria ( or hives ), insomnia, stomach upsets, obstipation, pruritus, changes in blood pressure, infrequent vertigo, an increase in the anxiety levels, seizures and even diarrhea. Some of the psychiatric side effects that might be experienced range from hallicunations to hypomania, sleeplessness, confusion, delusional tendencies, apathy, nightmares, tension, increased irritable behavior and memory disturbances. In patients already suffering from psychotic diseases like schizophrenia, these ailments might get worsened along with the intake of Moclobemide. Treatment with Moclobemide is not done with other MAOI inhibitors. Breast enlargement and hepatitis are some of the rarer symptoms observed.
Generally, an overdose of Moclobemide may result into its interactions with other foods and drugs, and if the patient shows emergent symptoms, immediate medical attention is needed. Even though Moclobemide is reversible in nature, and only mild adverse effects may be experienced. Conventionally, patients suffering from liver diseases or problems with liver functions are given one third of the normal dosage.
