Postpartum Depression: Information on signs and symptoms of the condition

Usually, the symptoms of postpartum depression appear to be quite similar to baby blues in its initial stages. In fact, most of the signs and symptoms are common, such as crying jags, mood swings, insomnia, sadness, restlessness and irritability. However, in case of postpartum depression, the symptoms are usually long-lasting and more severe in nature. Anxiety is prominent in case of post partum depression.

Women having post partum depression are likely to be easily worried and anxious about unnecessary things or over the health of the baby. Additionally, some mothers become more obsessive about the safety of the baby and developed intrusive thoughts about causing harm to the baby.

Some of the very common symptom s of postpartum depression includes, lack of interest in the baby, negative or ill feelings towards the baby, worrying about causing harm to the baby, hurting the baby, lack of pleasure and enjoyment, lack of concern, deficiency of energy, no motivation, feelings of guilt and worthlessness, appetite changes, sleeping problems, recurrent suicidal thoughts and overall irritation and restlessness.

Postpartum depression affects the new mother immediately after the birth of her child, and it develops over a certain period of time. It will usually last for a couple of months. In some women however, the symptoms might not appear in the first few months. It might take 3 to 5 months of the signs to manifest completely.
