There are many factors which a doctor will take into consideration while recommending a dosage of lithium. These include the patient’s response and tolerance to the medications, the nature of the product being used, whether the patient has any other health problems, whether the patient is taking any concomitant medications. During the early stages of treatment of acute mania, the recommended dosage is 600 mg lithium taken three times daily.
In case the extended release preparations are used, the recommended starting dosage is 900 mg taken twice daily. Such high dosing is recommended because it helps to create a significant level of lithium in the blood. The dosage may be adjusted every 5 to 7 days till the desired blood levels of lithium are attained. When lithium is taken for the long term management of bipolar disorder associated depression recommended to start with a low dosage and gradually increase dosage.
A point to remember is that when lithium is prescribed in people with kidney problems, a lower dose is recommended because they tend to excrete less lithium from the body. It is best to take lithium with milk or food, although it can also be taken without food. Take the medication at intervals recommended by the doctor. Drink plenty of water and fluids to keep the levels of lithium in the blood from spiking. Do not stop the medication or alter dosage without the guidance of a medical practitioner.
