Family therapy plays an important role in the treatment of depression. If a counselor feels that the root cause of a patient’s depression lies within the family or if he feels that a person’s depression can affect other members of the family, he may recommend family counseling. If a person suffers from depression, he can exert a negative impact over his family as well. For instance, if a husband or wife is depressed, the negative attitude and behavior he or she displays can affect the spouse and children.
Sometimes, problems within the family like financial issues, death, marital conflicts can give rise to depression. In both these cases, it is essential to get family therapy. The main aim of family therapy is to identify the effect of a person’s depression on interpersonal relationships within the family. The counselor will attempt to understand what each member of the family is going through and feeling. He will then attempt to make the members of a family understand each other.
This is required since depression can interfere with normal communication, problem solving and understanding within a family. Family therapy can help both the patient and his family members to sort out their feelings and work out constructive solutions. The patient also responds well to counseling since the root cause of their problems is being resolved and they feel understood and cared for. This calls for lesser dependence on drugs and other treatment methods.
