Bipolar depression vs. unipolar depression

Bipolar depression is almost the same as unipolar depression, when its symptoms are concerned. The symptoms are usually alike for a couple of weeks after which some minute changes can be noticed. The difference between bipolar and unipolar depression lies in the manic episodes, mania is basically a state of increases level of pleasure or agitation, which is common in case of bipolar depression. However this characteristic is not commonly seen in case of unipolar depression. Often the episodes create a back and forth like effect from extreme manic highs to very low levels of depression.

Unipolar depression, on the other hand, is characterized by 5 or even more than 5 symptoms of chronic depression for at least 2 weeks consecutively. This has been reported by the National Institute of Health. The symptoms of depression is likely to include agitation and irritability, troubled and disturbed sleep, changes in eating habits and appetite, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, guilt, withdrawal symptoms, concentrating problems, suicidal behavior and overall abnormal activities.

Whilst the conditions are different and so are the symptoms, the treatment options for these two conditions are almost the same. In both the cases antidepressants, mood stabilizing drugs and therapies, and counseling methods are used for treatment. Together, these methods of treatment help in normalizing the health condition and also encourage stability.
