Depression, if serious requires perfect medication as well as therapy treatment like talk therapy or behavior therapy. If severe depression is left untreated it can be dangerous and can lead to many problems.
But the problem is nearly half of the depression patients do not seek medical help and therefore they come across the effects of the same which are sometimes threatening.
If depression is basic in nature then some of the symptoms that are seen in the patients are sadness, anger, lack of concentration, not interested in things, avoiding meeting people. Such people will also have sleep problems, fatigue and overall feeling that they are not keeping well. This kind of depression does not need medication. Proper family support and some helpful therapies can bring in relief.
But in severe cases of depression, the situation is threatening because the patients have suicidal thoughts; they tend to harm themselves or others. Depression may sometimes even take form of bipolar disorder which is quite dangerous. Experts feel that most of the severe cases of depression do not respond well to medications. Under such circumstances ECT or electroconvulsive therapy will work. It is therefore recommended to seek treatment for depression in the initial stages itself.
